WESTECNEWSVolume 7, Winter 2001Fruhling Digs SeattleCustom Conveyor Makes Komo Expansion A BreezeSince the founding of Ed’s Bulldozing in 1952, Ed Fruhling has moved the soil needed to keep Seattle growing. As Seattle has expanded so has his business into Fruhling, Inc. a thriving family company that "Digs Seattle." This winter a Westec custom engineered excavation conveyor and hopper feeder have made quick work of the 130,000 yards of soil that Fruhling Inc. contracted to remove for the KOMO expansion in downtown Seattle. Ed and his son, Dan, have plenty of experience using backhoes, clams, loaders , track excavators and conventional conveyors to remove the soil needed for major building projects. But they came to Westec looking for something special. They wanted a conveyor that would pull dirt almost vertically out of a site. Westec’s engineering department custom designed Fruhling’s 110 foot conveyor with a beltwall conveyor belt that carries 400-450 TPH of material at up to an 80 degree angle out of an excavation site to a 22 yard hopper to deliver the material to haul trucks. "We were loading 14 yards in 24 seconds and had 27 trucks moving about 3,700 yards a day," Fruhling said. "The conveyor is self contained. It doesn’t require an outside power source. It folds up so we can pull it to the next site and be working as soon as it is in position. This conveyor is the latest thing for deep excavations," Fruhling explained. "It has the KOMO job three weeks ahead of schedule and it’s working exactly like we figured. It will even haul water right up the belt".
